“Day number two,” Renee mumbled as she scanned the front of the morning paper. Flipping through the pages, she ran her eyes down each column in search of her desired section, “here we go!” She sighed as she pinpointed her target. “Relished Moments is looking for people to go school to school to take pictures. What about that?” She continued without waiting for Cian to speak, “The newspaper is looking for a new cartoonist. Oh! This sounds interesting…”

Cian’s mind slowly drifted toward the night before as she slid her feet underneath Renee’s legs for warmth. She heard less and less as she thought about the way he’d grabbed the front of her shirt aggressively demanding her closeness and trailed his hand down her back, causing her skin to burn underneath her shirt. He pried open her tight back pocket to force his hand inside, creating a whole new set of flames. The way he pressed his lips against her neck, allowing his tongue to connect with her skin. Damn his lips were soft! She thought to herself, bringing her hand up to touch the area where his lips met her skin. “Hello!” Renee’s annoyed tone broke through the cloud she was riding. “Huh?” She replied, “That’s cool!” She gave a quick answer to a question she didn’t hear. “This is for you and you’re not even listening!” Renee lowered her arms, causing the papers to ruffle, “You’ve been acting funny since Sunday! What the hell is up with you?”

“How have I been acting funny?” Cian cut in.

“Last night, you came in singing so damn loud that we heard you from upstairs, when we left Ramone’s party, by the way, he called Eric asking about you last night, anyway, when we left his party, you had a huge smile on your face, and then there’s the painting of Wil-” Renee’s jaw dropped, “You slept with, Will!”

Cian keeled over in laughter, adjusting her position on the couch, “Really, Renee?!”

“It makes perfect sense! After all there years you decide to paint and who do you paint? Wilson!” Renee sprung from the couch.

“I’m not sleeping with him, Renee!” Cian continued to laugh.

“You better not be! I mean it, Cian! You know that’s not accepted and it will bring you more bullshit than you need!”

“Renee!” Cian ended her laughter with a smile. “Sit, let me explain.”

Renee pushed the hot coffee mug and it’s contents back as she took a seat on the edge of the coffee table.

“I’ll be honest and tell you, I have been in such a good mood because of Wilson. It’s not what you think though! We just want that friendship back! He is still the same sweet, playful Wilson that we used to play with all the time. He just grew up… to be very tall…and sexy!”

“See, you didn’t have to say all that at the end! That’s why I’m concerned! It’s fine if you’re friends! Hell, I want that friendship back too, but being attracted to him is asking for trouble! Today it’s we’re just friends, tomorrow you’ll be in love with him!”

“Renee!”

“Just be careful! That’s all I’m saying!” Renee rubbed the back of her head nervously. “As long as you don’t see him everyday…” She was interrupted by a knock at the door. Renee exhaled sharply, slowly making her way toward the door.

“Hello, Renee.” Cian heard the voice creep through the door followed by a repeated greeting. Renee moved to the side, allowing him to step inside, “I’m going to go see my mom before work. Talk to you later Cian.” She closed the door behind her.

“Hi Dad.” Cian spoke in a low flat tone. She knew why he was here, and silently wished he’d leave. “Hello, Cian. Is something wrong with your phone? I’ve been calling you for the last few days. Even left you two messages to call me back.” His voice was stern with each question, mimicking a lawyer, waiting for the right time to begin his argument.

“I’ve been busy…looking for a new job.” She mumbled.

“You have a job, at the diner.”

“Umm, no! Your favorite daughter fired me for not agreeing with what I do with my free time.” Cian stood, walking toward the door, preparing to put her father out.

“She told me about that. She also mentioned Wilson De Luca.” He followed her steps. Cian frowned. Figures Phaedra would go blabbing about something she knew nothing about. Run back to daddy and tell him whatever she could to cause more tension in their relationship. “Yeah, so?” She replied, picking at her fingernails.

“I don’t want you around him!” He moved forward to make his point, adding a stern expression to match his tone.

“I’m a grown woman! I don’t live under your roof, no longer work for you, and don’t rely on you to take care of me so you don’t have any say in what I do!” She opened the door stepping back, “You can go now!” She crossed her arms, turning her head to signal the end of the conversation. Gary walked out the door, turning to face her one last time, “I expect to see you at the diner tonight!”

“Then you’re setting yourself up for disappointment! Have a good day, Dad!”

She slammed the door in his face, retreating to the couch. Her spot was now cool and her groove had undone itself, probably when she leapt from it in a rush to put him out. Easing into a comfortable position, she gazed out the window, admiring the contrast of the white clouds against the blue of the early morning sky. They were issuing warnings. Renee and Gary both. Don’t get to close to him. Stay away from him. Gary’s reason would never follow the question that burned in her brain for fifteen years but Renee’s was out of fear. Fear that’s she’d run into something that wouldn't end well, fear that she’d cross that clearly drawn line of color, or something of the sort. Like a little girl who needed protection, they were shielding her from something she doubting she needed shelter from. It’s only Wilson. He is just a friend. The same friend she’d mourned years ago and had been happy to see. Although Renee had a way of telling the future, this was one prediction she’d planned to ignore.

She ignored the stray lock of hair that fell into her face with the light breeze, whispering what she truly believed, “It’s only Wilson. He is just a friend.”

** I just knew I took a picture of Gary from the front...oh well. maybe next time. Might be moving this story so the pictures show up in actual size instead of bloggers idea of "large".

About time you updated this. Cian's in denial. She knows this is headed to more than just 'friendship'. I get that the people close to her are trying to shield her, but I'm glad she's following her heart, making her choices, and choosing to fail if it does get to that. Great to see the different perception on color lines.

Now, about blogger, I think it has to do with your page/ template orientation, and the design of your page. I'll PM you at DD if you want help with changing it so the pics appear larger.

Great update

Lol! I knew you were going to feel that way! I'm sorry A lot of things have come into play, keeping me from updating. She is! Who spends most of their time thinking about a friend?

Thanks! I was thinking that too. a big part of me does not want to change the layout but I can't get with the small pictures.

Great Update, Qui!
Too funny, how she's fooling herself. We all know better, and so does she - in her heart!

People certainly like to interfere in her life! I'm glad she stuck to her guns with her dad, and I hope she won't take Renee's words to heart.

sitting with mouth open at Dad telling grown daughter "I don't want you around him." Huh? Wrong century LOL!!

Cian is a lot more interested than she's admitting! Wonderful update!

and on the size of the shots...there are definitely ways to change the size of your shots on Blogger. I'm guessing Valpre has already helped out there, but it's not hard.

It is still so hard to believe that families can cling to prejudice. I only hope that Cian does not get caught up in it. She may be fooling herself about her true intentions with Wilson but my guess is his feelings go deeper and he knows it.

Hoping she lets her heart remain open.

S.B: He really did try that on his grown daughter! Notice how he didn't correct her when she said his "favorite daughter"?
Yu're right, she is a lot more interested then she is telling herself! Thanks you!

Gayl: No, not at all. It's just sad! Cian has not yet reached that pointwhere she puts her happiness first so getting caught up in it will most likely happen.
She is definitely fooling herself and yo're right, he knows what he wants and is not hiding it!

Thank you Gayl!

The fact that the both of you take the time out to read this means so much to me! Thanks again!

I can't understand these parents. I mean I know that your child will always be "your baby" but really? They are grown! Stop trying to control them! Good for Cian for telling Gary what's up AND kicking his ass out!

I commend Cian for standing up to her dad. Even as parents you have to know your boundaries...you can't control the aspects of your grown children's lives.

Cian, sweetie, De Nile isn't just a river in Egypt. She may be saying she wants her friendship with Wil back...but what I am hearing is much much more than that.

Renee, though I know she is only trying to look out for her friend, is almost as bad as the bystanders, if she cares for Cian, she would be supporting her and not telling her what she should and shouldn't do!
